Skunkworks has launched a new identity and website for The Scientist in Residence Program, a BC-based non-profit whose mission is to excite, inspire and support elementary school children and teachers to discover the world through hands-on science. This program is based on the partnerships that develop between teachers and scientists, and their sharing of knowledge and passion for both teaching and science. Two teachers and a scientist in residence work together at local schools to develop and deliver science units comprised of hands-on lessons on specific themes. There is a major focus on the experimental process of science. The lesson plans fit the BC Ministry of Education guidelines for Science K to 7.
We were inspired by the great cause and partnered with the Scientist in Residence Program executive to redesign the brand and corporate identity (business-cards, letterheads, PowerPoint templates, labels) and create a new WordPress-based website.
The key element of the new site is a series of 176 (and counting) science lesson plans and worksheets freely available for use by other educators.

We are proud to be a sponsor for the Scientist in Residence Program and look forward to seeing this unique educational initiative continue to grow in the future.

Demonstrating a commitment to sustainability continues to gain traction as a viable and necessary tool to attract clients, make your practice more cost efficient and do your bit to combat climate change. Nothing like a win-win-win to start off the work week. The July/August issue of Law Practice magazine (an ABA Law Practice Management Section publication) features a bullet point guide to “Going Green to Stay in the Black.” (page 9 for those of you who subscribe). The quick and dirty (Er…make that clean) checklist is pulled from the Meritas Leadership Institutes’ “Green Guide for Lawyers” – a download the group released last year. The Guide was developed as a best practices resource for lawyers seeking certification under the ABA-EPA’s Law Office Climate Challenge.
We have our own initiatives here in BC. Several of the bigger Vancouver firms (Alexander Holburn Beaudin & Lang LLP, Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP and Clark Wilson LLP) have put themselves at the forefront of capitalizing on green leadership by adopting formal sustainability policies and initiatives.
Clark Wilson, for example, is participating in a Climate Smart Case Study (complete with YouTube video and Office Supply “Amnesties”). Their spokes-lawyers, Peter Tolensky and Michal Jaworski provide a practical endorsement for the business case behind developing a green strategy. Moreover, their easy to implement initiatives will hopefully inspire other BC firms (big and small) to get creative about shrinking their carbon footprints.
The point that you don’t have to be “big” to make a difference is ably demonstrated by sole practitioner Barbara Day Sort, who shares some of her green practice tips in a recent letter to the Canadian Bar Association.

And not because of the abundance of rain. Many of our clients are adopting or thinking about developing sustainability policies for their offices. This includes looking at the use of environmentally friendly options for printing brand collateral as well as looking at greener options for corporate swag. In days gone by this was often prohibitively expensive. Those days are gone. Almost every paper supplier is coming out with FSC and PCW content papers all you need to do is ask your printer (or your designer) about the options — they will be happy to oblige. Green advertising is an issue that interests me and I’ll be providing links and tips for where you can look for help greening your marketing mix. But right now…I have to go put on my galoshes and run a couple errands.
